Frequently asked questions
The text came out wrong or incomplete. What can I do?
Try with more light (the flashlight helps), get closer, hold the device steady and tap the screen to focus on the text. Keep the page flat, with no shadow over it, and pinch to zoom if the text is small. Recognition works best with printed text; handwriting varies a lot.
Which languages does the app recognize?
The app detects the language by itself, using iOS's text recognition. The list of languages depends on the iOS version: English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and Italian usually work well. Newer iOS versions recognize more languages.
Is my photo saved on my device?
No. The photo taken with the camera stays in memory only, the text is read and the picture is discarded. The app also keeps no history: when you close the result screen, the text is gone. If you want to keep it, copy or share it before closing.
Do I need internet?
No. Text recognition and reading aloud happen on the device itself.
I denied camera access. Now what?
Open Settings > ScanText and turn on Camera. In the meantime you can still use the gallery button (top left) to pick a photo.
How do I listen to the text? Can I change the speed?
On the result screen, tap Listen. The button next to it changes the speed (0.5x, 0.75x, 1x or 1.25x) and the app remembers your choice. Tap Stop to interrupt. The voice is chosen from the language of the text.
The voice sounds robotic or is not in the right language.
The app uses iOS voices. To download better voices, go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Voices and choose the language. The app speaks even when the device is in silent mode, but the volume must be up.
How do I copy or share the text?
On the result screen, tap Copy to put all the text on the clipboard, or Share to send it to another app. To copy only part of it, press and hold the text and select.
